"Childish Games" - Hippos are the most dangerous mammals worldwide and kill about 500 people per year. These kids, however, seem not to care and provoke a hippo submerged in water with a stick. I came upon this scene somewhere on the road in Uganda while waiting for a mechanic to fix our once again broken down car.
Luckily the hippo remained calm and nothing happened even though the kids also threw rocks at it.

Some more wildlife portraits from this summer's self drive adventure through East Africa. These photos may make it look like we had magnificent wildlife sightings, but this was not the case.
Most of the time it was driving around for hours without seeing anything interesting. My main focus were the big cats but throughout the whole trip we did not see any cheetahs at all and only one single leopard or rather the leopard's back disappearing in the high grass.
Nevertheless, it was a great adventure and just being toe to toe with the gorillas was more than worth it.

I went to Tanzania to see the migration of the wil

I went to Tanzania to see the migration of the wilderbeest but ended up seeing one more migration, the migration of hundreds of 4x4 jeeps (last photo).

After driving through almost the whole Serengeti for 2 days I hoped to witness and document one of the greatest wonders of the natural world - the great wilderbeest migration. Unfortunately the only bridge across the Mara river within a day's drive had been broken down for months which meant that we and hundreds of other cars could not cross, were stuck and had to take a look from a very unfortunate position, photographywise. With so many cars in one place the experience was not bad but also not as great as it could have been.

I could tell you a lot about all the problems and challenges all these cars created but would rather focus on a little known fact about the migration itself. In photo no. 7 you will see that a zebra is leading a big wilderbeest group. Apparently this is a common thing. Zebras are very clever and remember where to cross the river so the wilderbeest follow a zebra but right before the crossing the zebra would fall behind, let the wilderbeest enter first and be eaten by the crocodiles lurking in the water. Only after that the zebra would cross safely.

After learning this, one might think how stupid the wilderbeest are, but maybe we are even more stupid since we are the ones spending thousands of dollars flying into the Serengeti and days and hours waiting for the wilderbeest to cross.

I have finally managed to select and edit most of

I have finally managed to select and edit most of the photos from this summer's epic trip through East Africa. Visiting Uganda, Tanzania and the Seychelles in one big journey was an incredible adventure even though I am not hundred percent happy with the photos I could take. Rarely did I have so much bad luck in a single trip, but this is another story.

I will post many more photos from Africa in the fillowing weeks. Stay tuned.

Some more great news! Yesterday I received the mes

Some more great news! Yesterday I received the message that I have made it into the finals of the very prestigious "Travel Photographer of the Year" - Award. I cannot show you the nominated photos yet, but will do so soon.

Please wish me luck and keep you fingers crossed as nothing has been won yet and the last and final round of judging will take place in December.

During my recent trip to Spain I did not have much

During my recent trip to Spain I did not have much time to search for cool locations and great light, so not much of the atmospheric street photography that I usually prefer happened. Instead, I tried to take photos while exploring the cities by foot with my wife and focused on the funny and bizarre. Sometimes, I even shot with my (new) phone - a thing I had always refused to do by now.

The photograph you are looking at is one such example. No great camera and lens needed, just a good eye, creativity and some luck. I hope the picture makes you chuckle.
